Guten Tag,

Joseph

English version:

Good day,

I have an old Hellas 1841W that I need to have some assiatance with, I do not know the German language, I'm from out of the country. I am unsure what the short forms on the buttons mean, I've read that it is able to pick up FM radio? If anyone has any information about how to pick up FM or switch it to FM mode please let me know. I am able to pick up AM with the radio. Can someone help translate the short forms and abbreviations on the front and back?

Thanks again.

Joseph

Hi ,

Thanks Christopher, I have tried the UW but it does not pickup anything. The speakers just make a humming noise. with a slight hissing sound in the background. Under the Shortwave and AM settings it picks up lots. Mostly at night.

Hi!

Have you conect the cables in this image http://img197.imageshack.us/i/photonr.jpg/ accurate with the FM-antenna connectors?

It seems to be a technical damage. Is the radio in original condition? Are the capacitors original oder new? How big ist your knowledge in reading schematics, soldering an electronical questions?

Hi Christopher,

I do computer repair, So I have knowledge in soldering. the FM Antenna is in the same place as when I got the radio. I pick it up from a local dump. The guy who dropped it off said his kids blew the speakers out of it. The radio has had a power supply replacement to a 120V power supply done by the previous owner. The capacitors as far as I know are original. I am fairly good with schematics but not the greatest :P. And electronical questions I am pretty good with. Like I said I repair computers normally. And everything else seems to work on the radio except FM.

Thanks again,

Joseph

Hi Joseph!

OK, everthing works except of FM...

The most probability bugs could be:
- The tube ECC85 or EABC80 has an damage (have you some to replace?)
- The contactors are dirty. You could try to clean them with some Tunerspray, but use only a very little in the UNPLUGED radio. Switching the keys many times an let it dry a few houres.
- A capacitor in the HF-circuits is damaged (the most of the old are damaged -> viewtopic.php?t=2700 The types with the red arrow are bad! Green arrow is good.) You could change them all or select them with a cicuit.

This brings no improvement it could be difficult. Then you need a circuit, to mesure some voltages.

Gruß Christopher :)

Hi Christopher,

Here is a picture of the Tube while the radio is on. Not sure if you can tell if its bad just by looking at it. The contacts on what? How do I find the HF-circuits?

Thanks again,

Joseph

By the way...

Where (in which country) are you living?

I ask this because some countrys are still using a different frequency range (66 to 74 MHz) for FM broadcast, which this radio is unable to receive.

In this case, the radio would only produce a hissing noise when switched to "UW", or maybe a buzzing noise if a TV transmitter works on a frequency between 87.5 and 100 MHz in your area.

Hi Joseph and welcome to "Dampfradioforum",

what Lutz has written is an interesting question. If your band range of FM transmission is outside 87-100 MHz it is little wonder that you can't receive anything.

If it isn't, then there is probably something wrong with your FM tuner. It may be the ECC85 (or whatever it is) there may be dirt in the tube's socket or there may be a problem with the switches. Sometimes a resistor leading the current to the FM tuner tube may have been damaged due to overload.

Perhaps you will have to measure the voltage at the anode of this tube later.

Bear in mind that you are dealing with high voltages - unlike you have it in computers - so be careful!

We can write in English, as you see there are some of us here who understand it and can try to help you :bier:

Klaus-Dieter
