AGC with amplifier - any radios?

Hello,
recently I was browsing through old radio book and I read about different types of AGC (or Automatische Verstärkungsregelung). Seemingly nothing new, but then I found schematics of AGC with amplifier. It was placed between usual small value capacitor from last stage of IF amplifier and AGC diode.
Does anyone knows if this solution was used in any radios or is it just a theory or solution for big military receivers?
