UHER Variocord 263 hilfe bitte!

Dear friends,

Excuse me for writing in English. I'm from Cyprus. My grandfather had this perfect tape recorder, UHER Variocord 263. I recently pulled it out of the attic and found that it works great: everything is spinning and glowing, just the sound is “dull”. An expert told me that playback head replacement is needed. I searched the whole eBay and didn't find any 4 track heads for replacement. That is, the device is working, but not as it should. And there are a lot of records on reels. Please, help me: where can I buy such a head, or at least tell me its technical specifications for replacement in order to choose a similar one in measurements and data. I really want to fix this UHER.

Hello, Mark,
These Uher Tape Recorders have the Heads mounted to the Heads Cover, which is held in Place by 2 Srews on the Top.

By loosening the Screws You can pull up and remove the whole Head Assembly.
You schould check, if the Head is clean. If clean, then you schould look, if the head Surface looks worn out and uneven.

Maybe You can make a Foto of the Head Surface, and post here.

There are also many Chances that the Amplifier is not working perfect, and this is the Cause of the poor Sound.

I assume, that the expert did clean and demagnetize the heads first?
